Negative Entropy — Mika Tajima, 2014

Mika Tajima’s Total Body Conditioning takes its name from a physical conditioning program developed to adapt the body to an exercise regimen emphasizing endurance, flexibility, and performance through the seriation of time and the partitioning of bodily space.
The exhibition comprises three scenes—display, work, and fitness—that invoke technologies developed to control and affect the body.&nbsp;Each scene traces the management of the body in different spaces and temporal contexts from factory assembly lines to therapeutic “after work” locations. Featured in the exhibition alongside painted hot tub objects, Tajima’s machine-woven Negative Entropy acoustic panels portray spectrograms of field recordings from Toyota-powered Jacquard looms, an assembly line at a Toyota car factory in Japan, and a server colocation center. Using the same industrial source recordings, Alvin Aronson collaborated with Mika’s band New Humans to create a soundtrack for the exhibition. Using microsound processes, the field recordings are recombined into washes of placid sound, through which the throbbing pulse of drum machines periodically surface. The compositional process mimicking principle of “jidoka”—the core of Toyota’s production method of lean manufacturing that defines the relationship between machines and workers (referred to as “automation with a human touch.”) Through extreme control of time and space demonstrated by this global production system, the natural body comes in tension with the machinic body.

ALVIN ARONSON (Studio OST / White Material, US)

Hailing from rural Missouri by way of New York and LA, Alvin Aronson is a musician and DJ rooted in experimental sound design and future-primitive techno.

The White Material Records affiliate’s first two EPs showed his sonic range and deep production skills. Through City EP’s primordial drones and jacking machine funk and&nbsp;High Rise’s saturated palette of metallic drums and vertiginous chords, Aronson was quickly labeled “a dangerous talent”.

Aronson’s live sets cut vectors through space and time, using modular synthesis to render immersive atmospheres and hypnotic drum tracks at their most sublime. Each set is tailored to its context and have spanned a range of venues, from smokey warehouse parties to backwoods estates.

Most recently he has recorded with fellow White Material labelmate Galcher Lustwerk recording under the name Studio OST. The pair’s latest LP, Scenes (2012–2015), compiles cinematic ambience alongside Rust Belt club cuts.

The exhibition’s three scenes—display, work, and fitness— invoke technologies developed to control and affect the body, from factory assembly lines to therapeutic “after work” locations.&nbsp;

The soundtrack, created by Alvin Aronson in collaboration with Tajima’s band New Humans, uses the same industrial field recordings from Toyota-powered Jacquard looms, a Toyota car assembly line in Japan, and a server colocation center. The field recordings are broken into very short sound particles and rearranged into placid washes of sound, with cardiac bassdrums periodically breaking the surface. Here the process mimics Toyota’s “jidoka” production methodology, which defines the relationship between machines and workers (referred to as “automation with a human touch.”) Through extreme organization of both sonic and rhythmic time, the soundtrack expands on Tajima’s exploration of the tensions between the natural body and the machinic body.<img width="500" height="499" width_o="500" height_o="499" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/2fb0b4fe117a738be9e8366d4d4db16671f2b16939ad20139c2428a0a1f78085/aa_tajima_bwsm.png" data-mid="76204" border="0" data-scale="51"/>
